Issue Type:
Application window not visible / off-screen

Issue Description

Users may report that an application is open but not visible on the screen. The window may appear in the taskbar but cannot be accessed. This commonly occurs after:

  • Disconnecting from a dock or external monitor

  • Using Remote Desktop or Citrix

  • Changing display resolution or scaling

  • Closing and reopening a laptop lid

Resolution Methods

Follow the methods below in order. Most issues are resolved using Method 1 or Method 2.

Method 1: Move the Window Using the Keyboard (Recommended)

This method works even when the window is completely off-screen.

Steps

  1. Click the application icon on the taskbar to ensure it is active.

  2. Press Alt + Space on the keyboard.

  3. Press M (Move).

  4. Use the Arrow keys to move the window back onto the screen.

  5. Once the window is visible, press Enter to place it.

Method 2: Move the Window from the Taskbar

Steps

  1. Hover over the application icon on the taskbar.

  2. When the window preview appears, right-click the preview.

  3. Select Move.

  4. Move your mouse or use the Arrow keys to bring the window back.

  5. Click to place the window.

Method 3: Snap the Window Back On-Screen

This is a quick method that works in many cases.

Steps

  1. Click the application on the taskbar.

  2. Press Windows + Left Arrow or Windows + Right Arrow.

  3. The window should snap into view.

Method 4: Reset Display Resolution (Multiple Monitor Fix)

Use this if the window was last used on a disconnected monitor.

Steps

  1. Right-click the Desktop and select Display settings.

  2. Change the Display resolution to a different value.

  3. Select Keep changes.

  4. Change the resolution back to the original setting.

Method 5: Cascade All Windows (Last Resort)

Steps

  1. Right-click the taskbar.

  2. Select Cascade windows.

  3. All open windows will be repositioned onto the main display.

Additional Notes

  • This issue is common after docking/undocking laptops.

  • Keyboard-based methods are preferred when users cannot see the window at all.

  • If the issue persists, reboot the system or verify display drivers are up to date.
