Users may receive a "User Cancellation" error when attempting to connect using the Azure VPN Client. The VPN connection fails before establishing a connection, even when valid credentials are entered.
Symptoms
Azure VPN Client displays "User Cancellation".
VPN connection fails immediately after selecting Connect.
Authentication may complete successfully, but the connection does not establish.
The issue persists after restarting the Azure VPN Client.
Resolution
The issue can be resolved by removing the WAN Miniport adapters from Device Manager and allowing Windows to reinstall them during a reboot.
Steps
Open Device Manager as an Administrator.
Click Start.
Type Device Manager.
Right-click Device Manager and select Run as administrator.
Expand Network Adapters.
Locate the following WAN Miniport devices:
WAN Miniport (IKEv2)
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IPv6)
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (Network Monitor)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)
WAN Miniport (SSTP)
Right-click each WAN Miniport adapter and select Uninstall device.
Repeat until all WAN Miniport adapters have been removed.
Restart the computer.
Windows will automatically reinstall the WAN Miniport adapters during startup.
Launch the Azure VPN Client and test the VPN connection.
Root Cause
Corrupted or improperly functioning WAN Miniport drivers can prevent Windows from establishing VPN connections correctly. This may cause the Azure VPN Client to return a generic "User Cancellation" error even when the user did not cancel the connection attempt.
Verification
The issue is considered resolved when:
The Azure VPN Client connects successfully.
The VPN tunnel establishes without errors.
The user can access internal resources through the VPN.
No additional "User Cancellation" errors are displayed.
Escalation
If the issue persists after reinstalling the WAN Miniport adapters:
Verify the Azure VPN Client profile is current.
Confirm the user's authentication is successful.
Review Azure VPN Client logs for additional errors.
